CROP INSURANCE
Covers a wide range of crops, but mainly Cereals, Cash Crops, Flowers and Horticulture
A.Cereal Crop Insurance:
Covers Wheat, Maize, Barley and Sorghum against weather perils, namely:
I. Drought
II. Excess Rains
III. Hail Damage
IV. Windstorms
V. Fire
VI. Uncontrollable pests and diseases
Important highlights of this insurance:
• Farmer required to supply the insurance company with yield data for at least the past 5 years/seasons or more.
• The insurance offers to cover a percentage of the historical yield , usually between 50-70% of the longterm average. This percentage is referred to as a Yield Guarantee.
• Seasonal Cover-The insurance lapses after harvesting of the crop.

B. Cash Crops Insurance
Covers mainly tea, sugarcane & coffee against named perils of weather. E.g. Sugarcane is covered for fire only.
Important highlights of this insurance:
• Usually an annual cover
• Covers fewer perils than the cover for cereal crops
• Largely operates on an excess basis, rather than on Yield Guarantee basis

C. Floriculture and Horticulture Insurance
This is the insurance of flowers and horticultural crops. It covers both greenhouses and open field production systems.

• Drought is specifically excluded in the policy
• The farmer carries an excess ,each and every loss

D. Forestry Insurance
Covers professionally ran tree plantations. The trees are covered mainly against fire.
Important highlights of this cove include:
• Proposer to present a Valuation Report by a forestry expert
• The insured carries an excess/deductible of his choice, which affects the premiums charged
